Uloom al-Tafsir (علوم التفسير), meaning the “Sciences of Exegesis,” is the comprehensive meta-discipline that provides the essential theoretical and practical framework for interpreting the Qur’an. This field encompasses all prerequisite knowledge necessary for a qualified exegete (Mufassir), including the study of Qur’anic manuscripts, abrogation (Naskh), causes of revelation (Asbāb al-Nuzūl), Meccan and Medinan classification, Qur’anic linguistics, and styles of recitation (Qirā’āt). Essentially, ‘Ulūm al-Tafsīr is the critical toolkit that guarantees the integrity, precision, and methodological soundness of any legitimate effort in Tafsir, protecting the sacred text from subjective or erroneous interpretations.
