Quran or Koran

There are two famous opinions:

  1. The word قرآن Quran is derived from “قرأ”،”يقرأ”،”قراءة”،و”قرآنا” with the origin “القَرء” which means the merged or joint (or even collected). The Quran has been named so because its joint the Verses and Suwar with each other. 
  2. It is driven from `Qara` (to recite). Thus, it is called `the Quran` for it is a Book to be recited (73:4), or because the revelation began by `Read` (96:1). The second opinion (driven from the root ‘to recite’) seems more accurate.
  3. The word is derived from the Syriac word قريانا Quryana which means read (or study) the holy book.

History

the Quran was revealed by the angel Gabriel (عليه السلام) to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Mecca and Medina beginning in 610 CE. gradually over a period of approximately 23 years and ending with Muhammad’s ﷺ death in 632 CE.
